Joanne Hayakawa and Gail Roberts
Aug. 12 - Oct. 18, 2007
"Natural Connections: Joanne Hayakawa and Gail Roberts," an exhibition of paintings by Gail Roberts and ceramic sculptures by Joanne Hayakawa.
"Natural Connections" explored the effects of twenty-five years of professional and personal dialogue between these two artists, who have been colleagues and close friends since 1982. As Professors of Art in Ceramics (Hayakawa) and Painting (Roberts) at San Diego State University, they have shared ideas about art, teaching and personal experiences that over time created interweaving connections between their individual works. Both artists take inspiration for their imagery from nature. Their works address society’s increasing alienation from the natural world. Their shared concern for the cultural values affecting the use of natural resources has contributed to a collection of works that resonate with interactive meanings when seen side by side. The exhibition was accompanied by a brochure written by San Diego Union-Tribune art reviewer Robert Pincus.
