Concert Do's and Don'ts

Guidelines and helpful hints

Please take a moment to read these guidelines and helpful hints. Being courteous and respectful of other concertgoers will make the event that much more enjoyable – for everyone.

Arrive Early But Not Too Early.  Each two-hour concert begins at 6 p.m. and a few thousand people will be attending each event. So expect some delays, coming and going, and plan accordingly. For safety during set-up, the concert sites on our ball fields open to the public at 4 p.m. No picnic cloths, chairs etc. will be allowed on the fields prior to that time!

Park Smart.  Parking is extremely limited, so please park legally and courteously. Bring comfortable shoes and enjoy your walk to and from the park. “Loading Zone” lanes are available at all sites. The best option is to use the free shuttle service available at three parks this year. See the “Map and Shuttle Info” page for more details.

Keep a LOW Profile.  Remember that everyone wants to see the performers, so please bring LOW chairs only. If you have a health requirement that dictates otherwise, be courteous and choose your seat location accordingly – at the outer edge of the audience. Shade structures are not allowed except along the back fences of the parks.

Come Prepared Against Mosquitoes and West Nile Virus.  Wear long pants and long sleeve shirts to cover your skin, and apply repellent containing DEET, Picaridin, Oil of Eucalyptus, or IR3535 to clothes and skin.

No Pets. No Bikes. No Smoking/Vaping.  Pets are not allowed within the concert venue. It’s in the Municipal Code and will be enforced. The same prohibition holds for bicycles, skates, skateboards and rollerblades. And if you want to smoke or vape, you will have to leave the park premises. PLEASE, the laws apply to everyone – not just to “the other guy.”

Watch Your Kids.  Children are very welcome, but please keep a watchful eye on them at all times. Also, please make sure they do not disturb neighboring groups. And don’t forget, Family Open Studios, our great hands-on art-making activity for children, takes place during one concert at each park site.

Eat.  This year’s expanded on-site edible options are tasty, convenient, affordable, and offer something for every palate! Our food vendors also support TGIF with donations and a share of their earnings. So a “Bring Less, Buy More” policy keeps your picnic simple and helps TGIF too!

Drink.  City of Carlsbad law prohibits glass containers in all Carlsbad city parks. Realizing that TGIF picnickers traditionally bring glass beverage containers to the concerts, the city has issued a waiver of this regulation for TGIF concert events only. If you come across any broken glass, please alert the concert crew so we can take care of it right away.

Dance.  Keep in mind that our groups play music that people can dance to, and they certainly do! So if you want to avoid being jitterbugged on, set up your picnic away from the infield area.

And Be Merry.  Please join us in thanking all the terrific staff – such as the crew, the Explorers, the Parks & Recreation staff, the Carlsbad police officers directing traffic – who help make these concerts safe and enjoyable for everyone.

Recycle
We’re proud of the city’s strong commitment to recycling and reducing landfill waste. As you enjoy your picnics, remember to separate your empty bottles and cans from the rest of your trash.  Then when you clean up your area, just look for the groupings of trash cans – and use the appropriate ones:

    • Blue rectangular ones for glass bottles, plastic bottles, and aluminum cans
    • Round ones for all your other trash.

And please, carefully throw away your glass bottles, do it carefully, so the glass does not b-r-e-a-k. We appreciate it!

When the Music Stops.  Our concerts end by 8:15; everyone must exit the park by 9 p.m. at the latest. We appreciate your cooperation on this matter. Please don’t linger in the park; our crew needs to work in a safe environment to dismantle the stage and collect all the trash - safe for them and safe for you.

8 for $5, 40 for $20.  You can win some great prizes in the Opportunity Drawings organized and conducted by the Carlsbad Friends of the Arts. Funds raised through the Opportunity Drawings not only help support these TGIF concerts but other programs organized by the city’s Cultural Arts Office as well. The Friends also have some terrific souvenirs for sale at their table at each concert. And we encourage you to support arts and culture in Carlsbad by becoming a member of the Friends this summer too.
