Clark Shaw was manager of the Chicago Opera Company when he built this lofty Greek Revival-style home in 1927. For 10 years, its redwood ceiling provided great acoustics for his home concerts. Then in 1937, Shaw’s sponsor suffered financial reverses, affecting both the opera and Shaw’s own investments. When originally built, ornamental gardens were an integral part of the design, with rare palms and an avocado grove.
