Reduce your risk of colon cancer

Who: Dr. Dhruvil Gandhi, M.D., Tri-City Medical Center

The American Cancer Society estimates 136,830 people will be diagnosed in 2014 and 50,310 will die from colon cancer in the United States. Although most cases can be successfully treated if caught early, it is still important to stay healthy and try to prevent this disease. Bring your questions and your friends to this free, informative lecture on colon cancer awareness & prevention. Learn tips from Dr. Gandhi who knows how to discuss this embarrassing, yet important topic in a light, fun yet informative way.

• What causes colon cancer
• How colon cancer is detected
• How colon cancer is treated
• Keys to early detection and prevention of colon cancer

Dr. Gandhi did his residency at University of Illinois Chicago- Mt Sinai Hospital and completed the ACGME Accredited Colorectal Fellowship at the University of Texas Houston Affiliated Hospitals. He was awarded the Resident Research Award at Texas Society of Colorectal Surgeons 2011 and is the author of several publications.

Oil & acrylic workshop

Join our instructor, Mary Ann Stabile, for some fun and inspiration and learn to explore the magical techniques of painting with oils and acrylics. There will be a demonstration of the different painting styles that will be used in her upcoming classes. Participants should be serious about enrolling in upcoming classes to participate in this “hands on” workshop. Space is limited to the first 10 students, call 760-602-4650 to reserve.

Seaside Singers practices begin Sept. 24

Need an outlet for your desire to sing? The Seaside Singers might be the group for you! We are a newly-formed, mixed four-part choral group of adults 50+, who sing with a piano accompanist. All are welcome to come to a rehearsal and check us out!

At-home balance training
Who: Judy Condie Giuliano, PT, GCS (Physical Therapist Board Certified as a Geriatric Clinical Specialist)

Judy will take participants through a simple exercise program that can be done at home to reduce fall risk. The Otago Exercise Programme includes strength, balance and flexibility exercises, as well as a walking program. This program has demonstrated the ability to reduce fall risk by 35%, especially in people over 90. Falls continue to be a major risk for impairment and injury in seniors although most falls can be prevented. Join us to learn how to reduce your risk for falls in your own home.

Computer classes returning!
Lavi Istrate is a credentialed computer instructor with a passion for teaching that has continued for more than 25 years. She has a California Teaching Credential in computer occupations and has been teaching adult education computer classes for the Capistrano Unified School District since 1991. Her teaching techniques incorporate useful hands-on projects that come in handy for any household.

iPad - Introduction

The iPad is defining a new category of computing…one that is portable, easy, and fun.   This session is for newcomers to the iPad or for those considering purchasing one.  We will discuss the basics and demonstrate some exciting apps that help to make the iPad productive and fun.

The recent wildfires remind us that we need to be prepared for emergencies.  The time to figure out what to take in case of evacuation is now!  Our instructor, Mike McMahon, will share a personal story of his family’s evacuation due to the Poinsettia Fire.  He will present an organized and thoughtful approach that can help you calmly and efficiently respond to the call to evacuate your home.

More and more photographers are taking advantage of photo and video sharing websites .These sites (e.g. Facebook, Flickr, You Tube) provide online hosting at little or no cost .This frees you from the burden of printing, mailing, or emailing your photos/videos to family and friends .Our instructor, Mike McMahon, will explain the details and get you started with online sharing.

A must for experienced students wishing to design, mold and glaze individual works of art, useable items and gifts. Studio guidance will be provided by instructor, Dee Pope. All supplies and clay are provided. Four-week session starts Sept. 4  |  $56.70R/$63NR

New! Introductory ceramics classes

This introductory class is for anyone new to clay that wants to experience working with clay and molding clay projects. Students will design and mold cups, bowls and sculpture projects. All supplies and clay are included. Six class session starts Sept. 8  |  $93.60R/$104NR

New! Tappercize classes
When: Fridays | 11 a.m. to noon | DS

Tappercize is a fun way to exercise while learning to tap dance! Learn basic tap steps while dancing to the oldies of the 30s, 40s and 50s. This one-hour class consists of a warm-up, learning steps and dancing to music, followed by a cool-down period. Tap shoes are optional.
Fee for four classes: $33.30R/$37NR. Drop-ins accepted, $12.

The Senior Center is looking for volunteers in the fitness room, dining room, computer lab and delivering meals to homebound residents. Those with a passion for a particular topic can even give a presentation or teach a class.
