Carlsbad Traithlon runner

The 33rd Carlsbad Triathlon is July 13, 2014.

The Carlsbad Triathlon is a sprint race consisting of a 1K ocean swim, 25K two-lap bike course and a 5K run.

Special Note: If there are extreme weather conditions including, but not limited to, high surf, strong rip tides, or poor visibility due to fog, the swim portion of the race may be canceled.  The triathlon would then transition into a run-bike-run.  The California State Lifeguards will assess the water conditions the day of the race. Safety of all participants is our priority.

NOTE: Participants who have not finished the race by 10:45 a.m. will be redirected to the finish line via an alternate route using the sidewalk and will be considered pedestrians. This will be strictly enforced by the Carlsbad Police Department.

Rules

Timing

  • Participants are required to wear a Velcro band/chip, at the ankle, throughout the race.
  • Relay team members must pass the band/chip at each transition. After you finish, turn in the band/chip at the end of the finish zone.
  • A participant who pulls out of the race must report to the timing tent to turn in the band/chip and collect personal gear from the transition area (after 10:30 a.m.). There is a $30 charge for a lost band/chip.
  • Participants who are unable to complete the event for any reason must turn in their timing chips and report to the timing tent, located at the finish line. This is a mandatory requirement in order to maintain a record of all participants, to ensure participant safety and for the peace of mind of friends and family. Failure to return a chip will result in a $30 fine.

The swim

  • The first wave starts at 7:30 a.m. (unless there's a weather delay) with 5 minutes between each wave.
  • Swimmers will be assigned to a wave with no more than 150 people (based on age group). Each wave is designated by a colored cap.
  • Lost a cap? See a race official at the swim start and be sure to get the correct color cap. Do not change waves. Swimmers starting in the wrong wave will not receive a time and/or may be disqualified.
  • Swimmers should seed themselves according to swimming ability (fast swimmers to the front). Please try to avoid striking or swimming over another swimmer(s).
  • Wetsuits are optional at the Carlsbad Triathlon, since water temperature can be a bit unpredictable. Generally expect a temperature range of 64° to 67°.
  • No swimming aids (e.g. fins, kickboards, buoyancy devices) are allowed.
  • A swimmer in need of assistance should roll over on his back and wave to a lifeguard.
  • Swimmers are welcome to warm up in the water between 5:45 a.m. and 7:15 a.m. but are urged to stay near the shore.

The bike

  • Although a bike safety inspection is not mandatory, it is highly recommended.
  • The bike leg takes place on City of Carlsbad roadways. In some locations, cyclists will be sharing the roads with vehicular traffic. In those instances, the bike and car lanes will be separated by orange traffic cones. Riders must stay in their lane, ride to the right and always pass other cyclists on the left.
  • A participant whose bike breaks down mid-race must remove the bike and exit the course. Staff with trucks will be circulating the course. Need assistance? Flag down a truck.
