Storm was a beautiful German Shepherd who came to the City of Carlsbad Police Department from Denmark. He worked from 1996 through 2000 with Officer Gannon Maszk. Storm’s most notable attribute were his looks…..every suspect who ever saw him approaching gave up!
In one case, a fleeing felony suspect fought with officers and then fled on foot into a field area in the south end of the city, near Box Canyon. Officer Maszk and Storm approached the suspect who turned and began running backwards. The suspect had his hands behind his back and as Officer Maszk ordered him to stop at gunpoint, the suspect yelled for the officer to shoot him since he “would rather die than go back to prison.” Officer Maszk sent Storm after the suspect and he immediately dropped to his knees and began screaming. The suspect still had his hands behind his back. Officer Maszk gave Storm his command to not bite and to stop. Due to the speed at which Storm was running, when he sat, he went sliding on the grass, passing the suspect, bumping into the suspect only slightly. The suspect continued to scream and Storm was in place a few inches from the suspect and barked until Officer Maszk could reach him. The suspect was taken into custody without further incident.
In another case, residents arrived home to find a burglar in their home stealing their property. The suspect fled out the back of the house and into a community park area and through neighbors’ backyards. Officer Maszk and Storm arrived on scene and Storm immediately began tracking the suspect. Storm tracked for approximately one mile, finding property belonging to the victim that the suspect had dropped along the way. Storm ultimately tracked the suspect to a street where officers had a subject detained closely matching the description of the suspect. Storm tracked to the subject and began alerting his handler with barking that the subject was indeed the suspect. Officers explained to the suspect that Storm had identified him after tracking him from the residence and the suspect confessed to the burglary.
